What science knows
Bergamot oil is cold-pressed from the rind of a small, sour citrus fruit. It is bright and green rather than sweet, built mainly on limonene, linalyl acetate and linalool. Perfumers prize it as one of the most elegant top notes in natural perfumery: it opens a scent and makes the heavier notes beneath it feel lighter.
What tradition says
Almost all of the world’s bergamot grows on a narrow strip of coast in Calabria. It is the scent of Earl Grey tea and the heart of the first eau de Cologne, created in Cologne in the early eighteenth century.
