What science knows
Rock rose leaves exude a sticky resin, labdanum, that protects the shrub from heat and drought. Its oil is rich in labdane compounds and gives the deep, warm, amber-like base note perfumers prize — and, as a natural fixative, it slows the evaporation of lighter notes so the scent stays on the skin.
What tradition says
In antiquity, labdanum was combed from the beards of goats that had grazed among the cistus shrubs of Crete; it scented temples and royal unguents. Today, most of it comes from the wild hills of Andalusia.
