APOTHECARY No. 20 · SOUTH ASIA & THE TROPICS
Vetiveria zizanoides · found in VEYIRA Massage & Body Oil
Vetiver is a tall tropical grass whose dense, fibrous roots reach several metres into the soil. The oil is distilled from those roots, slowly, over many hours. It is one of the most complex materials in natural perfumery — hundreds of sesquiterpene compounds, among them khusimol and the vetivones — and one of the most tenacious: a dry, earthy, softly smoky note that holds a blend on the skin.
In India, vetiver is called khus. Its roots have long been woven into screens and mats that hang in doorways and are sprinkled with water in the hot season, so the air passing through is cooled and scented. Across the tropics, the grass is planted to hold the soil against erosion.
In VEYIRA, vetiver is the heart: dry, earthy and quiet — the ground on which the resins rest.
