What science knows
Cardamom is a relative of ginger from the rainforests of southern India. Its small green pods hold black, aromatic seeds, and the oil distilled from them is rich in 1,8-cineole and α-terpinyl acetate — a fresh, cool, sweetly spiced note that opens a fragrance.
What tradition says
Called the queen of spices, cardamom has been traded since antiquity. Greek and Roman perfumers worked with it, and it still scents Arabic coffee today.
